RAEDAVAN MARRI
32 ♦ MALE ♦ STRAIGHT ♦ RESEARCHER/CHRONICLER ♦ DEVEREAUX
KIN
The Marri clan has been in Nibiru for as long as anyone can remember. Descended from the pure Ifrits of old, they try to maintain a good ratio of djinn to human blood via carefully arranged marriages with other families. This grants many of the clan members a strong ability to manipulate fire magic, leading many of them into the arcane arts. The Marri clan is extremely widespread, and many of the older members hold high positions of power. This makes them almost untouchable, which is extremely important for one single reason: Every child of the Marri clan is required to have their lamps opened between the ages of 5-10. It is believed that the strong will survive, even at that young age, and that the weak will die. Subsequently preserving the family’s powerful bloodline.
Should parents refuse to open their child’s lamp, they will be ostracized from the family and the lamp will be opened by another family member. The item within will be locked up in the family vault, and kept from the child as punishment. Rarely, a child is born with a date to open the lamp earlier than age five. These few children are the only ones who receive blessings, and the family as a whole considers them special. To quash the rumors, on the pre-determined date the lamp was scheduled to be opened, each child (or adult if the opening date was later) has an elaborate presentation ceremony where they are officially gifted with their item of fate. Feasting and fêting fills the entire day, and thus the family’s secret continues on in the darkness.

APPEARANCE
Raedavan stands about 6’1” tall, and has very light blonde-ish white hair. His hair is cut short, all except for a forelock that has three beads woven into the hair. His skin is a dark tan from years spent under the brutal sun, and his body is lean and muscular. There are a couple of stylized white tattoos on his chest and shoulders, but they are only visible if he goes shirtless. He wears a variety of clothing, of more traditional styles while he is at home in Nibiru, but slightly less formal elsewhere so that he doesn’t stand out quite as much. He wears quite a bit of valuable jewelry, including a torque around his neck that marks out his lineage and standing in his family. He has a monocle on his person at all times, and it is clipped to the torque by a very fine golden chain so that he cannot lose it. Many people believe it to be nothing more than an affectation, but it is in fact his item of fate.
PERSONALITY
Serious. If only one word could be used to describe Raedavan, that would be it. What little sense of humor he has is very dry and doesn’t show up very often. He relies on the formalities and traditions of his culture to keep his distance from people. This limits the number of friends he has, but sadly doesn’t eliminate having enemies. Raedavan is also very reluctant to touch other people, and this also makes him seem stand-offish and snooty. Oftentimes he can turn on the charm to sweet talk people into parting with information or something he needs, but it is nothing more than a mask for him to put on and take off at will. His biggest fear is that he will never again be able to touch another person without paying a heavy price, and that he will spend the rest of his life alone in the darkness because of this.

HISTORY
The first couple years of Raedavan’s life weren’t much more than the usual blur of happy childhood. He had friends and cousins (lots of cousins) that he could play with. He had it pretty good except for one little thing. His father was a pretentious wank, who believed very strongly in family tradition. Thus it came to be that on Raedavan’s fifth birthday, he lost the ability to touch. It manifested slowly at first, short periods of time here and there after playing with other children. Raedavan would come home and complain that he was feeling unwell or that he felt different. It would fade after a while, but it happened over and over again. His parents thought perhaps that he was cursed to be constantly ill, but then even stranger things began to happen.
After spending time with his mother, aspects of her curse began to manifest around him. This repeated itself over and over again; first just with his immediate family, but then it progressed on to people around him. Even random people he bumped into on the street. The longer he touched a person, the stronger the curse would manifest in him. A brush on the street could cause it to manifest for only a few minutes, whereas a handshake could cause it to manifest for hours. Because of this, Raedavan began to avoid touching other people, relying on the most formal of customs to keep his distance. This caused his friends to label him a snob, and they drifted apart. He remained a loner as the years passed, devoting himself to studying and research.
He chronicled every curse and blessing he had experienced over the years, and decided that once he officially received his item of fate, that he would travel around the world to continue his research. At the age of 25, he was officially presented with the monocle contained within his lamp. Raedavan had perfect vision, so at first he thought that perhaps there had been some mistake with his item, but after looking through it, he realized that he could see a darkness wreathing nearly everyone in the room. Scattered here and there were a few people bathed in shining gold. He didn’t realize it right away, but those glows were representative of each person’s curse or blessing. The brighter the glow and the blacker the darkness, the stronger that person’s curse. This seemed to be a godsend at first, but he had no idea of the heavy toll using this item would take.
